SU Health & Dental Plan

Why a Health & Dental Plan?

To help students pay for the health services they need, a collective health and dental plan has been put in place by your Students' Union. The coverage includes health, dental, vision, and travel benefits. It also includes tuition insurance, a benefit not often covered by a parent's plan. The plan covers the unexpected and provides you with preventive care services to keep you in good health.

Who's Covered?

All undergraduate students enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit hours in either the Fall or Winter Terms and who pay SU fees are automatically covered by the SU Health & Dental Plan. Certain exceptions exist. Please check your student account to confirm if you have been charged the Plan fees.

What's Covered?

Among other features, the Plan covers health, dental, vision, and travel benefits:

80% for prescription drugs to a maximum of $10,000 per policy year
100% for vaccinations, up to $150 per policy year
Over $3,000 for health practitioners (psychologists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, etc.)
More than $300 in vision care (eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses, laser eye surgery)
$750 in dental care (checkups, cleanings, fillings, extractions, endodontics, periodontics, etc.)
$5,000,000 in travel health coverage per incident and 120 days per trip
$5,000 for trip interruption and $1,500 for trip cancellation in the event of a medical emergency
Ambulances, dental accidents, medical equipment, and more! Visit for complete details.

How Can I Save More?

You can further enhance your benefits by visiting health professionals who are members of the Dental, Vision, Chiropractic, Psychology, Physiotherapy, and Massage Therapy Networks. You are covered for the insured portion regardless of the health professional you choose. By consulting a Network member, you will get additional coverage. For example, by visiting a Dental Network member, you will receive an additional 20% off dental services, enabling you to get up to 100% coverage.

Studentcare has partnered with PsyVitalitï to bring SU Health Plan Members the Online Psychology Network—a group of psychologists who offer their services via secure online video conferencing at a preferred rate, so that students can consult a psychologist in the privacy and comfort of their own home. PsyVitalitï psychologists offer 50-minute individual adult therapy or coaching sessions for $160—$20 less than the cost of a regular session in Alberta. Plus, first-time sessions only cost $100 (for a limited time). That means your first visit would cost you as little as $20. Find out how to book an appointment.

How Much does it Cost?

The total cost of the Plan is $292.22 for students starting in September ($140.60 for health coverage and $151.62 for dental coverage) for coverage from Sept. 1, 2019 – Aug. 31, 2020. Students beginning their studies in January pay $194.81 ($93.73 for health coverage and $101.08 for dental coverage) for coverage from Jan. 1 - Aug. 31, 2020. The cost of the Plan is automatically included in your tuition and other fees.

Can I Change My Coverage?

If you are covered by another extended health and/or dental plan (i.e. a parent’s or spouse’s employee plan), you can combine both plans to maximize your overall coverage and reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs.

Alternatively, you can opt out of the health portion, the dental portion, or the Plan in its entirety during the Change-of-Coverage Period from Sept. 3 - Sept. 23, 2019 and receive a credit to your student account for the amount of the Plan. Only new Winter Term students can opt out between Jan. 2 – 24, 2020.

If you are eligible, the Change-of-Coverage Period is also when you can enrol yourself, your spouse and/or dependent children in the Plan. Only new Winter Term students can enrol their spouse/dependent children between Jan. 2 – 24, 2020 for coverage from Jan. 1 – Aug. 31, 2020.
