Dagligtale Update

Dear Membership,

I would like to thank-you for your concern and engagement in conversations regarding the 

Dagligtale. There is always an interesting relationship established when financial and legal ties

exist between student government and student media. This year’s ASA Executive have been 

acutely aware of this tension and have not interfered in editorial decisions in terms of what can 

and can not be published. We respect that the role of the 4th Estate (the press) is to make the 

public aware of government decisions and conversations. This is no different in student 

government and we welcome any and all criticism from both the Dagligtale and from students-
at-large. 

We have heard and we understand students’ desire to separate these two organizations. For at 

least the past five years, the ASA has had conversations regarding Dagligtale independence. 

While very little has come from these conversations in the past, this year’s ASA Executive made 

establishing a plan for Dagligtale independence a top priority. 

At last night’s Students’ Council meeting, a motion was passed that will expedite this process. It 

is our hope that by the next academic year (2016/2017) we will establish an independent 

student media society that is editorially, organizationally, and financially independent of the 

ASA, the University of Alberta Students’ Union, and the University of Alberta Administration. 

The ASA, and myself personally, see the social and cultural value of having vibrant and 

successful student media on campus. Any and all decisions that are made regarding Dagligtale 

independence will be made with long-term success in mind. As we begin the consultation 

process in the coming days we welcome input from any student, staff, faculty, or community 

members. If we are going to make this change, we are going to do it in a way that ensures the 

long-term sustainability and success of the student newspaper.

Resignations and VP Communications Appointment

January 29, 2015

Dear ASA members,

We regret to inform you of the resignations of VP Communications Bhavin Patel and Off-Campus Representative Mark L'Hirondelle. Given other important commitments they stepped down from their roles on Monday and Wednesday respectively. Their contributions to the ASA have been significant and valuable and we wish them well in all of their pursuits.

At yesterday's Council Meeting, we were pleased to appoint Joel Danyluk to the vacant VP Communications position. It is our pleasure to welcome him to our Executive team and we are confident he will fill the role with ease. Congratulations Joel!

We remain excited about the remaining months of our term and encourage all who are interested to submit nominations in advance of the upcoming ASA elections!

Elections and Appointments to the Augustana Student’s Association

The Augustana Students’ Association holds elections for the student council both in the spring and the fall. If positions on Council are vacant after the spring elections, they are open in the fall elections. There is a possibility, however, that these positions might still remain vacant after the fall elections. At this point, nominations are put forward by current members of the ASC, and subsequently voted on by these elected members. There is no obligation to fill these positions, which may remain vacant should Council see fit.

One Fourth Year Representative position and two Off-Campus Representative positions remained vacant following Spring Elections and in the more recent round of Fall Elections, the two Off-Campus positions again remained vacant while one Fourth Year candidate ran unsuccessfully. Given the remaining vacancies, the Augustana Students’ Council then nominated several candidates who expressed interest in the position. Council heard platforms from each nominee and then voted the respective candidates into office. It should be noted that while the appointment process is less rigorous than a direct election, representation is ensured by virtue of existing Council Members having been elected directly by the populace to make such decisions when necessary.

It is of utmost importance that information regarding elections is effectively communicated to the student body, and while there is certainly room for improvement, many posters were placed around campus and members of the ASA made announcements in numerous venues. Unfortunately, the ASA encountered unexpected challenges when the website crashed right at the time of elections. Council extends its apologies for the inconvenience and continues to repair the website, which is again online. The Augustana Students’ Association has every duty and intent to ensure appropriate representation. To that effect, the ASA is governed by various policies and procedures that outline election and appointment processes. If a candidate is running uncontested, meaning that they are the only person running for that position, voters are given the option to instead choose “none of the above” on election day. Currently, an uncontested candidate must receive 65% of the vote in order to be elected, and to ensure that students feel the candidate is appropriate for the position. Rationale behind this policy suggests that requiring uncontested candidates to win 65% of the vote instead of a simple 50% majority creates an incentive for candidates to put effort into their campaigns that otherwise might be unnecessary for a victory. If uncontested candidates do not receive 65% of the vote, the position is left vacant until the next election or until Council makes an appointment. People who exercise their voting rights to give a candidate office have the same legitimacy as those who exercise their voting rights to refuse office.

If there are concerns that the procedures undertaken by the Augustana Student’s Association regarding the process of elections or appointments did not follow policy and/or bylaw, the Student Review Board may be contacted by emailing .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

The policy stating that candidates must receive 65% of the vote to be elected is currently being reviewed, but is still in effect. Council concluded that it would be in bad faith to change the policy on elections after students had already voted and decided on their representatives for this term. Council has made reviewing the various policies on elections a priority this year.
